about

This album features a selection of some of the best segments of music from two separate 60+ minutes sessions that were 100% improvised. Some subtle effects processing and panning automation were added to some instruments during the mixing process. This album features guest improviser, Jonathan Sherman.

Track 02 contains a sample and tease of "Bury Me on Jupiter" by Chris Stainback/illogicians.

Dedicated to the memory of musician and human extraordinaire, Jonathan Sherman.

Secret Dad Trio was formed in 2011 originally for the express purpose of performing an improvised set of electroacoustic music at that year’s Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival (BEAF). Ultimately, we ended up recording, and eventually releasing, nearly all of those rehearsals, as well as the BEAF 2011 performance itself, and decided to keep the project going. I ended up moving to California in September 2011 and the group was quickly forced to become one that only got to together to improvise and record in the studio on any occasion that I was back visiting my family in the Bellingham area. When I moved back to Bellingham in July 2016, the three of us started talking about possibly playing a few live shows around town. We also thought it might be cool to do a series of shows where we invited different guest musicians to improvise with us at each show. Jonathan was the first person we asked to guest with us on drums and he was extremely excited to take part. In the late-spring of 2017, we finally got a day booked where we all hunkered down in our studio in Ferndale and spent a couple of hours improvising––of course while the mics were on and Pro Tools was recording. It was such an awesome day overall of just hanging out with friends not to mention an awesome session with an awesome guest musician like John. We had tentative plans once we got a show booked to go through the recordings, find the best segments, release those as an album, and then learn some of the improvised themes to use as springboards for improvisations during the eventual live performance. Unfortunately, with everybody’s complex schedules and other music projects taking priority, the show(s) never quite materialized and the rough mixes of the recordings have only been shared between the four of us. After moving away from Bellingham again in July 2018, I spoke with John on a number of occasions about finally working on mixing our recordings and releasing at least what we all considered to be the best moments from the two sessions we performed/recorded on that day in 2017. He was always game for this to happen, but somehow life always managed to move this project down the priority list for all of us. After Jonathan’s sudden and heartbreaking passing a few months ago, we decided now was definitely the time to move this project back up the priority list so we can share with all of those who loved Jonathan some amazing music created in the spur of the moment by an amazing human and musician who himself loved to share music with everyone he met.
